Freaky Friday: Batty Edition

Posted on June 21, 2013 by Caroline

The Palla bat uses its long tongue to mop up nectar. Seems pretty normal, right? Well here’s the freaky part:  the bat’s tongue becomes engorged with blood in order to do this. The blood makes little hairs on the end of the bat’s tongue stand up, allowing it to soak up food. Scientists discovered this freaky phenomenon after studying a high-speed video of the Palla bat feeding. Take a look for yourself! What do you think of this bat’s crazy tongue?

Freaky Friday: Fashion Edition

Posted on June 14, 2013 by Kelsey

We love unique fashion here at Plasticland, but sometimes fashion can be a little too unique! Some of these ensembles are downright freaky – which of course is why we just can’t look away!…

These insect inspired beaded face coverings at Maison Martin Margiela give me the creeps – and probably nightmares too!

Dissecting Sculptures

Posted on May 25, 2013 by Caroline

I stumbled across the artwork of Cao Hui and it definitely made me stop and stare for a moment.  I love the idea of dissecting classic sculptures and thinking about what they would look like if their insides were made of flesh and blood. It adds a new element to classic Greek and Roman sculptures that definitely makes them more interesting and more complex.

The way that these sculptures are cut up makes them look like building blocks, almost like giant toys that you could stack and unstack!

Freaky Friday: Be Reincarnated as a Diamond!

Posted on May 17, 2013 by Jordan

Let me start by saying that I had to check into this one to make sure it wasn’t a hoax before I believed it. There is an actual, real-deal company that will take your remains and turn them into a diamond which can be worn by your loved ones. Depending on how high your ‘weirdness tolerance’ is, you probably have a strong opinion that this is either very gross or completely awesome. But it definitely qualifies as a bit freaky either way…

Corpse Diamond - from company that turns your remains into jewelry

Pic courtesy of LifeGem.com

LifeGem (LifeGem) uses the cremated remains of you or a pet to create synthetic diamonds. One entire human body can provide sufficient carbon to make up to 50 one carat diamonds…

Yes, that was five-zero! You’re walking around all day long, carrying fifty diamonds in that skin! So remember to walk tall, cause your net worth AND self worth just went up!

…After the carbon from the corpse is purified, it is converted to graphite which is then used in the synthetic diamond process. The resulting diamond is engraved with the name of the dead, and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. In 2007 the company used carbon extracted from strands of hair from Ludwig van Beethoven to produce three diamonds for charity.

Hold up. First they turn you into Graphite? GRAPHITE!?! So at that pivotal point things could go either two very different ways; diamond or pencils. So your significant other decides you were just too industrious while alive to spend eternity as some tacky jewelry and tells these guys to just roll out a couple boxes of Ticonderoga #2’s to pass out to first-graders instead?

Freaky Friday – Fashion Edition

Posted on March 15, 2013 by Rebecca

Plasticland is known for it’s fun and unusual anti-trend styles, but some looks are too far off-the-wall even for our unique fashion sense. Here are a few fashion No’s (no, no, absolutely not… never!) that put the freak in “Fashion Freak” during fashion week…

At his New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013 Runway Show Jeremy Scott seemed to find inspiration by visualizing the love child of Big Bird and Yeti…

… whereas, during his own New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013 Runway Show, designer Thom Browne seemed to be designing for the Playing-Card soldiers from Alice in Wonderland – square with legs isn’t a common body type that we have come across, but apparently even the Queen’s cards get chilly in the winter…

…and lastly, at the Jean-Charles De Castelbajac Fall 2013 Paris Fashion Week show, a new definition of “Foxy Lady” was born…

All snarkiness aside, we really do value the act of individual self expression, and though these over-sized oddities are sure to get you lots of attention as you walk down the street, they are a bit too outrageous even for us – not everything counts in large amounts ♥
