Tasty Thursdays: Hobbit Edition

Posted on June 27, 2013 by Caroline

Since Kelsey recently did a post about the new Hobbit movie coming out in December, I thought I’d continue the Hobbit action with this week’s Tasty Thursday post! There are some pretty creative bakers out there, and these Hobbit-inspired treats are almost too cool to eat!

How cool would it be to get this cake for your Sweet Sixteen?

Star Trek…so close we can taste it!

Star Trek Into Darkness is for Trekkies

Picture yanked from Spin Off Online

Anybody else excited about Star Trek: Into Darkness opening tomorrow? Since we loved the last movie, our expectations are high; we’re about as excited as a Ferengi rubbing his ear with some Latinum (I know I’m a nerd – don’t you judge me!). What better way to help get us all in the celebratory mood than to feast our eyes on some yummy out of this world inspired baked goods!

Steampunk Star Trek anyone?

Mmmmm…Mochi Ice Cream!

Posted on March 14, 2013 by Jordan

Have you ever had Mochi Ice Cream? If you haven’t, you need to get some of this sweet, soft, melt-in-your-mouth goodness pronto, pal! But unless you have a Trader Joes or local Asian Market nearby you might be out of luck. It’s not really a mainstream thing here in the US (hey, just like Plasticland!). Japan has been keeping this one to themselves for a little too long. We owe a little thanks to the Frozen Yogurt joints for adding Mochi to their menus and putting it on the map for all of us in the US.

I have had a long public love affair with Mochi – it’s just a crazy soft, chewy texture with a flavor that is definitely sweet, but not super, in-your-face, pixie-stix sweet. So when I heard they took those cute, little bite size Mochi – blew them up and shoved a scoop of ice cream inside, I said, “Move over Turducken, there’s a NEW something-stuffed-with-something in town!” and then we all got confused and grossed out by Turducken

I’m digging the Green Tea flavor – it’s subtly sweet with a hint of tea to add a little herbal spice. But it’s also worth giving the other flavors like Strawberry and Chocolate a try to add a twist to those traditional favorites.

Must…find…Trader Joes…now…yum!

Tasty Thursday: Maine Root Handcrafted Beverages

Posted on March 7, 2013 by Kelsey

This past weekend I had the privilege of discovering Maine Root’s tasty selection of certified fair trade organically sweetened fountain sodas at a local Texas restaurant chain. The family company was started in Portland, Maine and now calls Austin, Texas home.  Matthew Seiler founded the company when he wanted to create a Root Beer satisfying to his own taste buds. Not only do they have a great tasting root beer, they also offer Blueberry soda, Ginger Brew, Lemon Lime, Mandarin Orange, Mexicane Cola and a few others – Yum!

Their bottled drinks can be purchased from their website and at Whole Foods and Central Market grocery stores. If you’re in Texas, you can check out their fountain sodas at Torchy’s Tacos, Hopdoddy Burger Bar and other local restaurants. I highly recommend their Doppelganger soda which reminds me of Dublin Dr. Pepper, one of my favorite beverages that is no longer in production.

Winter Wonderland Mushroom Cake

Posted on November 1, 2012 by Rebecca

OK, the term “mushroom cake” may sound a bit odd until you realize that the darling mushrooms perched on top of this delicious confection are actually made of meringue – YUM!

We found this incredible recipe for Guinness Gingerbread Cake with Lemon Filling and Meringue Frosting on http://www.bakingobsession.com (a fun blog with loads of mouth watering recipes) and had to share.  You know we love cooking with booze – considering our cook-book selection includes not 1 but 3 baking books devoted to the use of liquor in the batter: Booze Cakes – Spiked Confections, Intoxicated Cupcakes Cookbook, & Boozy Baker Cookbook – so the use of Guinness in this recipe is right up our alley 😉

The perfect treat for a special occasion, and a great way to wow your guests at a holiday party!
